Don't advertise on a big national website! Rather than trying to impress people that will
never become customers, focus your efforts and your budget. Advertising on
Missouri Trout Hunter will reach a very specific kind of individual. This type of
narrow niche marketing is highly effective at increasing your storefront traffic, as you'll
be reaching the individuals that are already planning a trip to your neighborhood.
Trout Fishermen Described
Most trout fishermen are college educated, in college, or planning to attend college, and they are
typically of above average intelligence. In addition to trout fishing, they typically also enjoy hunting,
camping, backpacking, canoeing, archery, barbecuing, golfing, woodworking, professional sports, boating,
and a bit of partying and social debauchery. Trout fishermen have chosen a relatively expensive hobby,
and they are willing to travel and continue to spend more money to pursue this hobby. They are also more
likely to plan multiple-day fishing trips. Most trout fishermen are employed full-time and cannot spend
as much time on the water as they like. Therefore, they are more likely to do research (on Missouri
Trout Hunter, for example) before planning their next trip. Trout fishermen are more likely to pay
considerable money to those individuals and businesses who can help them have an enjoyable trip.
Advertising Rates:
Again, we're trying to keep things simple here. Ready? 1 cent per page view for a full-size
banner ad. How's that for simple (and cheap)?
Just in case you're a little nervous about how much this will cost in real dollars, here's a
real world breakdown for you. Our biggest month to date was July 2006. That month we had 24,642
total page views, 9364 of which were of our home page. A banner at the top of our homepage
would have cost you $93.64, and every single visitor would actually see the ad. What would
your local newspaper charge for an ad? Where would that ad appear? How many people would
actually see it?
Maybe you'd rather narrow your advertising focus even a bit more. Let's say you own a campground,
canoe outfitter, restaurant or motel near a specific trout stream, and you want to advertise to the
folks already thinking about coming to your neck of the woods. In July 2006, the
Meramec River fishing report page was viewed 281 times, which
would have cost you $2.81 for a banner ad. That's cheaper than a gallon of gas. Not enough
exposure for you? You could have also placed the same ad on the
Meramec River page, the Maramec Spring Park page,
the Maramec Spring fishing report page, the
Trout Parks page, the Red Ribbon Trout Area page, and the
Rolla Area Trout Fishing page. Collectively, those pages had 1311 page views in July 2006, which would have
cost you a whopping $13.11 for a full-size banner. How can you pass that up?
