Trailside Guide: Fly Fishing, New Edition
John Merwin and Ron Hildebrand

This review was submitted by Michael Black.
"My wife bought me this book a few years ago. I still leave it in my fishing gear bag on all trips and use it as a reference, especially for knots. The pages are water proof and the book is actually designed to be carried along your trip.

Still Life With Brook Trout
John Gierach

John's books are so uniformly superb, it seems almost tiresome raving about yet another of his folksy collections. In this edition, he continues weaving tales of fly fishing trips with his old buddies -- well-known authors in their own right -- as well as speaking out for conservation and preservation issues, including a dam proposed for construction near his home. The book is far from preachy, though. Many have tried to describe Gierach's literary style with such descriptors as "blue collar", "meandering" and "breezy", but his writing reminds me of those campfire or saloon conversations with new friends after a day of fishing. The stories always flowed easily back and forth, not only about the day's events but of days long past as well, each story beginning with a variance of "you think that's funny?", and of course ending with laughter. And although the mood of his writing is becoming a bit more gloomy as he frets about aging, droughts, etc., reading this book brought back the warm feelings I experienced when reading his early work.
