This report was submitted by Josh Gowen of Cape Girardeau on 2/8/06

Date of Trip: 2/8/06
Times Fished: Sunrise to 10:00am
Air Temperature: Frigid
Weather: Snowy
Water Level: Average
Water Quality: Brown
What Worked: Nothing

It was in the low twentys and snowing very hard from 8 AM on. tried power-eggs (berkley), topwater bass popper, waxworms, and grizzly jigs... nothing. Many other anglers braved the weather also with no luck. I did see one guy catch two using corn late in the morning -- guess I'll try that next time.

Thanks, Josh. When the water's off color like that, trying to catch trout in lakes can make you lose your religion -- trout generally feed visually. In brown water, they'll switch to smell, and they'll sniff around at the very bottom. So, those who have success will generally be using something pungent -- salmon eggs, dough bait with extra garlic or stinky cheese mixed in, etc. -- and they'll leave it right on the very bottom. This is one of those rare times when "sit and wait" fishing works the best -- but it still doesn't work that great. BTW, corn doesn't have too strong of an odor, so either the guy got lucky, or perhaps he was chumming (??).

This report was submitted by Todd Ransom of Biehle on 1/4/06

Date of Trip: 1/4/06
Times Fished: Morning
Air Temperature: Chilly
Weather: Partly Cloudy
Water Level: Average
Water Quality: Brown
What Worked: Nothing
What DIDN'T Work: Spinners & Jigs

The water was muddy due to recent rain. There where fish jumping and taking surface bugs(?), but I could not see the bugs. There was just one other fisherman there. Will try again some other day.

Thanks for the report, Todd. Don't give up on the lakes. Muddy water always puts them off their feed. We're all anxious to hear how the new area in Jackson works out.

Remember, folks. If you heading out to Rotary Lake or any Missouri trout water, please be sure to send us a Fishing Report when you get back!
