Jefferson City Winter Trout Area
Fishing Reports
This page was updated 11/10/06

This report was submitted by Andrew Maienschein of Jefferson City on 11/7/06

Date of Trip: 11/2 & 11/6
Location: McKay Park Lake
Times fished: 8am - 2pm, and 330pm - 6pm
Air Temperature: Comfy
Weather: Partly Cloudy
Water Level: Average
Water quality: Milky
What worked: Trout Magnet, Lil' Minnow plastic, Rooster Tail

They stocked Mckay on 11/1 about 400pm with 2,600 trout. Catch an Release until Feb. 1 '07. It made front page of the Jefferson city news tribune. Lots of pictures of them stocking and a two part article, the best line, "the bigest trout would not fit the shoot, so we had to net them out"! NO SCENTED BAITS!!!!OR LIVE FOR THAT MATTER!! Conservationist has been out there both days! Lots of fisherman have been taking advantage of the winter program!! On Thursday I landed 15 and broke off / bites about over 20. On Monday I landed three and lost about 4 or five! They have put in 6+ plus pounders in again -- I have witnessed it again. A person that I have seen fishing next to me landed that size of fish a couple of times both days. Yes he was out there the same times both days. My biggest one was today, about a couple of pounds. Thursday they were schooled up -- if you found the school you were on fish, and today they were on the banks, literally.

Side note, last year I fished the Mexico lake, and its just a little bigger than a decent pond. With 1,200 trout stocked in it, talk about a good time! Very hard to find that lake, in a neigberhood, behind the High School.

Thanks for the update, Andrew. And thanks for the info on Mexico's lake as well.

This report was submitted by Gerry Ferguson of St. Joseph on 1/3/06

Date of Trip: 1/1/06
Location: McKay Park Lake
Times fished: Afternoon
Air Temperature: Balmy
Weather: Overcast
Water Level: Average
Water quality: Slightly Clouded
What worked: Yellow Trout Magnet,
Black & Yellow Marabou Jig, Inline Spinners
What DIDN'T work: Nothing

Catch and release only. Beautiful day. temp. in the 50's, overcast, wind out of the south around 10 mph., creating a nice chop on the water. Lots of people fishing. I caught a 15 in. Rainbow on the 2nd cast, using a black and yellow inline spinner. Followed by many misses on the yellow/black maribou with a srike indicator. Finally tried a yellow trout magnet with a strike indicator. Caught a 23 in. 4+ lbs. Rainbow. Very healthy fish. Another gentleman, standing 15 ft. from me, caught close to twenty trout on a yellow/black maribou with a strike indicator, ranging from 12 in. to 18 in., in less the an hour. The trick being to let the indicator/waves do the work and reel very slowly. Great day of fishing for Jan. 1st.

Sounds like a great day! Thanks for the report, Gerry.

This report was submitted by Kevin Miller of Linn on 11/14/05

Date of Trip: November 12
Location: McKay Lake
Times fished: Afternoon til evening
Air Temperature: Chilly
Weather: Rainy
Water Level: Average
Water quality: Milky
What worked: Black Wooley Bugger

I went fishing at McKay lake in Jefferson City. Caught six trout and lost several more. The largest was about two pounds. The best method seems to be to drift a black wooly bugger under a strike indicator, and just let it sit. The best fishing is in the coves. Good luck!!

Welcome aboard, Kevin, and thanks for the report. Hope we continue to get more feedback from the Jefferson City area.
