Kansas City
Urban Winter Trout Areas

This page was updated 11/16/05

The Greater Kansas City area has several lakes on both sides of the state line that are stocked for winter trout fishing, but only four of these lakes are in Missouri. And, since this is "Missouri" Trout Hunter, you'll have to dig up your own information about the Kansas lakes stocked with trout -- sorry! Even so, if you want to send us a fishing report for a Kansas City area lake that happens to be in Johnson or Wyandotte County, we'll be happy to post it.

For the Kansas City lakes, there are no bait restrictions and the daily limit is 4 fish. The most popular method of fishing these lakes is the sit-and-wait bait method. The most successful method, however, is fishing lures like in-line spinners, small spoons, rubber shad, rubber trout worms, and fly casting small colorful streamers
.

Alex George Park Lake
This is an 8-acre lake on the south side of the city -- a part of the 2400 Blue River Parkway. The lake is located at 108th Street and Blue River Road in Jackson county. From I-435 on the south side of the city, exit Holmes road. Take Holmes south to Red Bridge Road. Turn left on Red Bridge and left again on Blue River Road. You'll find the lake on your left in Alex George Park. There are no bait restrictions, and the daily limit is 4 trout. Call (816) 795-8200 or (816) 356-2280 for stocking information.

Chaumeire Park Lake
This is a 5-acre lake in Chaumiere Park (of course) near NE 43rd Terrace and Chaumiere in Kansas City. To get there from downtown KC, take I-35 north across the river. You may actually change from I-35 to I-70, but follow your nose back onto I-35 heading toward Des Moines. Take exit #9 -- it says MO 269 South and Chouteau Trafficway. Turn right onto NE Chauteau Trafficway (MO 269), very quickly turn right on North Cleveland Avenue, and very very quickly turn right again onto NE 43rd Terrace, which will take you right to the lake. The lake will be on your right. There are no bait restrictions, and the daily limit is 4 trout. Call (816) 444-3113 or (816) 356-2280 for stocking information.

Coot and Plover Lakes
These lakes are both found within the the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area. They are stocked twice during most winters with a good supply of rainbows, and occasionally you'll find some browns thrown in as well. To get to Coot Lake from Lee's Summit, take US-50 East to Missouri Hwy "RA". Turn right on "RA" and head south. The wildlife area is now on your left -- keep an eye open for the main entrance. Once you enter the area, keep right. Specific directions to Plover Lake will have to wait until we do some more homework! For stocking information, call (816) 524-1656 or (816) 889-STAR, extension 4560. You'll also find a link to a conservation department map of the James A Reed Memorial Wildlife Area on our maps page.
