Moran's Improved Tarantula This page was updated 12/14/07
Hey Walt! Here are a couple pictures of some of those taurantulas I tie. They differ from the original Turk's in a couple of ways.
First, for the tail instead of amherst pheasant feathers I use either white marabou or calf's tail. Second, I wrap
palmered hackle along the length of the body to help keep it float. Basically those are the only two changes I made,
so here's a recipe to go by.
Head: spun and clipped deer hair
Tail: White Calf's tail
Body: Dubbing of your choice
Ribbing: Fine copper or gold wire
Hackle: Palmered hackle of choice
Underwing: White Calf's tail
Legs: Rubber crazy legs color is once again tier's choice

Our thanks to Alex Moran for sharing a great fly. I'm a huge
fan of big ugly meaty-looking flies for catching big mature meat-eating trout, and I
have to admit that I've had some good luck with Adam's pattern. I tied up a few to carry
along on some solo trips last year (2009), and along with a number of normal-sized fish,
I caught a handful of big rainbows and a couple of big browns ranging between 16" and
22" long. Loads of fun!
