THE TROUT

The Trout are ultimately what you're after, of course, and Westover Farms offers something really extraordinary in this regard. The Westover Hatchery raises two different specialized hybrid rainbow trout with some big name ancestors. The exact genetic blend is lost to history, but it is thought the main Westover trout bloodline includes Shasta, Kamloops and Mount Lassen rainbow trout strains, with just a dash of McCloud redbands tossed in for good measure. In addition to the storied histories of those breeds, this hybridized result has one big strength that makes it a truly outstanding fish.

These rainbows tolerate high temperatures better than their more common cousins can, which actually means they have a tolerance for lower levels of dissolved oxygen. In other words, not only can these trout survive extremely difficult conditions, they can also thrive and remain quite active even through the hottest summer. It also means they can spawn successfully when conditions aren't exactly perfect.

But, there is also a second strain being raised at Westover Hatchery: a sterile hybrid steelhead-rainbow is now on the property. Steelhead trout are almost the exact same fish as a typical rainbow trout, except that steelheads drop down into the sea or the great lakes to mature before migrating back into their home waters to spawn. That behavior has led to the evolution of fast growth, aggressive behavior, and STRENGTH. So, while these fish are not traditional steelhead in the ocean-going sense of the word, those genes are present. And when you hook into one, for just a moment you may think it's a river otter.

In short, Westover Farms raises these two fish to insure an overall trout population with a high percentage of year-to-year survival, aggressive feeding for rapid growth, and successful spawning habits to establish a wild population with plenty of legitimate trophy-sized fish. And all this strength is a perk for the fisherman as well, as both strains fight like a boxer on steriods, at times even leaping two or three feet in air. So, not only will you be catching some special fish with storied histories. You've got a great chance at catching some real whoppers, and you just might catch a stream bred, born and raised wild trophy trout.
