Fishing Reports

This page was updated 2/11/09

This report was submitted by Mike Buckler of St. Joseph on 11/9/08

Date of Trip: 11/8/07
Times fished: 1:00 - 3:00pm
Air Temperature: Chilly
Weather: Partly Cloudy
Water Level: Above Average
Water quality: Gin Clear
What worked: Mini Jigs

I fished the Everyday Pond at MWSU again this afternoon and had the "best day" I have had there in the past 2 years! Today was "awesome" to say the least. It was 32 degrees when I arrived this afternoon, but the sun was peaking through and a little breeze from the west added to the cold air. I visited with another fly fisherman as I was rigging up and he said that the fish were "on like crazy" at daybreak this morning but have slowed down considerably. Well to my delight, they came back on a "feeding frenzy" around 1:30. I was using my old stand by mini-jig "john deere" that is used at Bennett Spring and landed 11 trout in less than 20 minutes. Several were around the 2 lb size and all were very healthy and "attacked" the jig. Fishing slowed down some around 2:15, but I did have a couple of nice ones who got off to my dismay and I noticed that my hook was bent on 3 occasions - still "slamming the jigs"! I had also fished the Everyday Pond on Nov 1,2,and 3 with some success 4-6 caught each day, but today was the best!! Thanks again to MWSU and the Mo Dept of Conservation for putting trout in this pond for us NW Missourians to enjoy the winter season here at home.

Thanks again for the help Mike. Sounds like a great day.

Date of Trip: 11/1/07
Times fished: 6:30am
Air Temperature: Comfy
Weather: Sunny
Water Level: Average
Water quality: Gin Clear
What worked: Various flies

I fished the Everyday Pond at MWSU the first morning after the trout were stocked the previous afternoon and had "great success". The trout were all "schooled" together, (I am sure they will get aclimatized), and were chasing various flies that were presented to them. I had great luck with bead head nymphs and copper brassies. I used my fly rod, and it reminded me of a very productive day at Bennett Spring! What great fun I had. I fished there many more times until the weather turned too cold. Many others cut holes in the ice and fished throughout December and January. I went back when ice thawed in early February and again had great luck with the flyrod on nymphs. Even had an ocassional success with an adams dry fly. Thanks to Dept of Conservation for putting trout in NW Missouri for us "die hard fly fisherman" to be able to enjoy catching trout in the late fall and early spring. Water turned very warm in March so fishing "died down" to say the least. Looking forward to November of '08 for more stocking.

Welcome aboard Mike. Looking forward to reading more about St. Joseph's new trout fishery. Thanks for helping.
